In 1996, the Company acquired a 15 acre vacant parcel of land at Randall Road and Algonquin Road in Lake in the Hills, Illinois. The land was located in a high-growth community that was underserved with retail. The mid-block parcel had very good exposure. Great Lakes solved many challenging engineering and roadway entitlement issues to properly serve the site and bring it to market.

The property was entitled for a multi-screen movie theater, a sit-down casual dining restaurant and two multi-tenant shops buildings. This entertainment theme was an emerging focus for communities across America that wanted to broaden their retail base.

Site work design and construction was performed by Great Lakes to accommodate a new 12-screen “stadium seating” prototype by Kerasotes Theatres which opened to great fanfare in 1997. Applebee’s quickly followed to fill in the casual dining position. The Company later developed and leased out the remaining two vacant lots on Randall Road with its own two multi-tenant retail buildings.
